General Description

This course will include a detailed deconstruction of the prescribed text as well as an examination of the delivery strategies that add student skill building and interpretive analysis. In this course the following will be covered:
examination of module focus for Critical Study; close deconstruction and evaluation of Hamlet in relation to the Syllabus Rubric; and development of student interpretive and response skills.

Secondary English teachers who are currently teaching the course elective or those who are considering doing so in the future.

Sessions

Developing Contextual Understanding

1 hour and 30 minutes

Focus will be on the dramatic elements of Shakespearean Tragedy and the T & L strategies needed for student engagement. Metalanguage and raising student awareness of the impact of dramatic devices and techniques would be examined. An overview of how the play has been received and valued over time would also be included.

Textual deconstruction

2 hours

Evaluating the language, content and construction of the play to highlight its textual integrity.According to syllabus guidelines, an informed personal interpretation would be achieved by examining the critical consideration of others. Stress would remain on the text as drama in tackling language, content and construction.

Developing student interpretive and response skills

1 hour and 30 minutes

Some examination of past HSC questions and exemplar student responses used to help clarify the demands of this Module. Focus would be on T & L strategies for enhancing student knowledge and understanding and exam response skills. This would include the use of wordles, mind-maps, response tables and ICT as study methods.
Resource sharing is strongly encouraged with the suggestion that participants bring a USB and/or laptop.

3. Writing paper if they prefer not to write in their course booklet.

Barbara has excellent knowledge of the text and she knows how to equip teachers with skills of how to confidently instruct the students. Great resources (ppts/pdfs/videos/worksheets). She is practical and explains concepts thoroughly. I’ll attend more of her sessions.
