This course introduces teachers to new teaching and learning methods based on the ground-breaking growth mindset research by world-renowned expert in the field of motivation, achievement and success Carol Dweck. Dweck has shattered preconceived beliefs about intelligence and ability.
Teachers will be equipped with a good understanding of the research evidence behind two contrasting student mindsets. Examining student motivation and achievement, and how this relates to beliefs students hold about themselves; the nature of their ability and how this interacts with teachers’ beliefs about ability.
This course is underpinned by a focus on teacher praise and feedback language; neuroplasticity – how the brain changes and a brain-based communication technique to manage challenging student (and adult) behaviours.
Mindset predicts motivation – increasing student achievement – decreasing the achievement gap.

Lorraine’s input was terrific. She gave us an overview of the research behind growth mindset as well as ways to implement it into our classroom practice. She also provided us with lots of good links and ways to follow this up ourselves.
Overall, staff thought the morning presentation was very good. At lunchtime, we suggested that the opportunity to apply morning work to some real scenarios involving praising process, etc. in the afternoon would have good and a great application of ideas presented. We were ready to move from the information that was presented – not sure Lorraine understood our suggestions on the day and took it to mean presenting on strategies rather than time to practice them. Also, some more movement and group work/report back in the morning sessions would have been good – time to digest/debrief/collaborate and then come back to the whole group.
Having said that, we enjoyed much of what was presented and mentioned to Lorraine we would be interested in having her return to speak with our parents or similar.
A very insightful and inspiring professional development session about fixed and growth mindsets. Our mindsets were challenged with her passionate ideas about how it is okay to make mistakes and rather than ‘look’ smart, ‘be’ smart by increasing the skill and knowledge levels of students.
