Sessions

Clipping Masks and Further Shape Control

45 minutes

Session looks at how to use the software to create clipping masks, which comes under a bigger banner of gaining further control over shapes in Illustrator.

Practical examples given, as well as time to experiment.

Intermediate Text Skills

30 minutes

Learning how to control text for a wider variety of applications, including; working with columns, understanding kerning, manual kerning, indentation, further work with type along paths and font shape filters.

Practical examples given, as well as time to experiment.

Shape Attributes and Layer Effects

1 hour

Shapes have much more potential than just fills and strokes. This session would cover ways in which we can achieve a range of aesthetics using different shape attributes and layer effects.

Practical examples given, as well as time to experiment.

Saving Files for intended purposes

30 minutes

The save as option in illustrator provides a number of complex options that have great benefits if we understand them, this session will look at how to create PDF’s that don’t change colours! We will also look at how to save files fro the web in a range of raster graphic formats.

Practical examples given, as well as time to experiment.

Working with Vectors that are neat!

1 hour and 15 minutes

This session looks at how to create vector artwork that can be transferred to a range of applications in a way that retains integrity. Very useful for using vectors with a range of cnc machinery or for insuring final artwork looks as intended. It is a precursor to the next session.

Demonstration, followed by tutorial example

Illustrator Vectors, Vinyl Cutters and other CNC machines!

1 hour and 15 minutes

A hands-on session in which I hope to have a CNC Machine in place to help demonstrate how vectors work with CNC machines.

Hands on Testing

Question/Problem Solving TIme

45 minutes

A time left open to cover things that teachers have found difficult throughout the day, or would like to cover again. Also open for answering questions people have brought with them.

I found that after the intro course, people really wanted to spend more time covering problems they had encountered.

What To Bring

If you would like to bring your own computer with Illustrator on it, that would be great!
A desire to learn!
Problems you have found in Illustrator that you need solving!

Pace was possibly a little bit quick, however this was also due to the time since beginner course was attended.

Knew next to nothing about illustrator and I walked away feeling very confident.

Going thru the work too quickly. Perhaps break up the course into 2 courses.

I found his course to be informative and will help me in the classroom as well as Exhibition invitations and signage. The presenter was very knowledgeable and communicated very well. Course notes will also be very useful.

Very practical applications of the use of Illustrator. Would have liked more time spent creating vectors and using vinyl cutter.

Jonathan was personable, friendly and helpful. He also brought us yummy treats. I think for an intermediate course it would be better if the participants have used illustrator before – more than just the basics as I would of liked to know more. Setting up focal point etc and poor Jonathan had to spend a lot of time with people/questions about basic stuff which was frustrating for us who has a good base knowledge. (Perhaps I needed an advance course rather than intermediate).

So helpful. It would be good to have time to practice a bit more but I appreciate that our time is very limited.
