From Pop to EDM, Jazz to Classical, the music creation possibilities for electronic devices are virtually endless.

This course will help you understand the basic principles and language common to countless APPS and DAWS, and will highlight a few particularly useful for both Mac (or IOS) and PC (or Android) based devices. Practical applications for classroom activities and Assessment Tasks will be included.

The Language of APPS and DAWS for Music Composition

1 hour

Understanding the language common to APPS and DAWs created for Music composition is a great framework to allow you to see the possibilities involved. This includes understanding files or formats, and how devices ‘Talk’ (or don’t talk) to one another when communicating with musical data.

A basic overview of the underlying principles is provided. Following this, exploring these concepts (as they appear in interesting applications) will lead to interactive exercises and group discussion.

Smartphones

1 hour

Some schools have a “No Phone” policy for the classroom. However, it can be difficult to tear a student away from their phone outside of this environment. Why not use this as a motivator? This session will explore the various Composition related APPS available for iPhone and or Android Smartphones.

We will use an existing composition, and then investigate how to prepare it for use with music composition on Smartphones. Participants will then have the opportunity to trial various APPS, manipulate various compositional elements and create more complex arrangements or new compositions.

Participants will have the opportunity to share their findings with the group and offer helpful insights they gained from their path of discovery.

iPads and Tablets

1 hour

This session will explore the various music composition APPS available for iPad and Tablets.

Taking an existing composition created on a Smartphone, we will investigate how to prepare it for use with music composition APPS found on iPads and Tablets.
