Always Learning-Differentiation in Practice

2 hours

Its the why that counts. Discuss Simon Sinek’s golden circle and how he has codified what great organisations do differently. They start with the Why. Your why is your compelling story and it will guide your decisions and help you stay on track when change get challenging. Today we are focusing on differentiation but why? Why do we differentiate? Why do we want to? What are the benefits for students?

Your School’s Why story: jot down what your instincts tell you about why we differentiate learning? work with others at your table and refine your list. Select your top 5 reasons and commit to post-it notes. allow 10 mins for the activity and interaction. go on a learning walk. What patterns are emerging? One participant from each group share ‘why’

What do we know about how students learn? Discuss the ‘triggers’ of emotion, personal, social, relevant, action and agency, getting into the ‘zone’, experiencing ‘flow’ and providing choice.

More than one way- share the multiple learning models and frameworks possible for differentiating a unit of work then move to the one we will work on today-Carol Tomlinson’s work adapted from June Maker’s research.

Sharing what is already happening: Play a bingo game. The board will cover a flavour of what is possible and why we’re going to kern about today and in future workshops. Examples include:
Off-level testing
Think, Stretch activities
Buying time by compacting he curriculum
Pitching the Pace
Flipping it
Opt in and opt out
Thinking Hats- De Bono
Real life audiences
Real work problems
Flexible, physical work zones
Multiple drafts & Excellence- Berger
Hang Outs
Collaboration tools
High mobility

Next the participants consider Tomlinson’s model and choose which aspect of the model they would like to use in their unit designs. Unit design begins. The facilitator assists with guided questions and then invites small groups on rotation to a pre-organsised table with LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® activities that explore beliefs about how children learn.

Finally, staff complete a pledge card, committing to paper 1 action they will start doing in their classrooms as a result of today’s workshop, 1 they will stop doing and 1 they will explore further.
