General Description

Too many students believe they don’t need to learn, or that they can’t learn. Professor Carol Dweck contends that this is due to students developing a Fixed Mindset with regard to their capabilities. Dweck argues that learning is stunted and many social issues can arise by having a Fixed Mindset. She says in order for students to flourish, they need a Growth Mindset – a disposition that embraces challenge, seeks out feedback and values effort as the pathway to mastery. Could a Growth Mindset be the key to unlocking our students potential, and how can teachers and schools cultivate a culture of Growth in their classrooms and schools?

This course will explore the research behind and implications of Mindset, as well some of the most common behaviours associated with holding a Fixed or Growth Mindset. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own mindset, and how some of our most common practices in school might serve to nurture or limit the mindsets of our students.

Very high quality masterclass. Considering the nature of our students in our alternative setting (our students come to us as they have disengaged from education due to sense of failure etc), i feel this course and its information is very relevant to how myself and colleagues could improve. The delivery of the content, anecdotes and research is made even more engaging through Dan’s ability to speak ‘with’ his audience as opposed with speaking ‘to’ his audience. He had my focus throughout and I hope to attend a live session some day.

Very relevant to my role in a K-4 school. Build on my previous ideas and gave me more things to think about and consider when working with students across all year levels.

Dan had great points that he made that related to my teaching and student’s learning. The fixed mindset video I am going to show to my students.

Nailed it!
I sat here nodding and chuckling at times as I feel like Dan was reading my mind. from the beginning I kept thinking, “this is all well and good but parents will never be on board” - funny that was the last part!

I want to get our paretns in to see this! Dan spoke from experience. You can tell he has been in the classroom and knows a lot about how students, parents and teachers operate.
I found myself nodding along often and thinking, “yep, you've nailed it”
Both teachers and parents would benefit from seeing this and putting it into practice, it takes a combined approach to ensure our students are receiving a positive message for growth.
