Session 1 - The Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences

1 hour and 30 minutes

A detailed unpacking of the syllabus rubric which will create an understanding of the module expectations
A selection of additional texts that can be used to foster a sense of the human experience
A number of strategies that attempt to engage the students within this particular module’s ideaology

Session 2 - Module A: Language, Identity and Culture

1 hour

A detailed unpacking of the syllabus rubric which will create an understanding of the module expectations
A brief overview of this topic area throughout society via key texts
A number of strategies to bring about personal engagement within the module

Session 3 - Module B: Close Study of Literature

1 hour

A detailed unpacking of the syllabus rubric which will create a detailed understanding of the module expectations
A brief overview of key technical terms applied to this module and required by the students
A brief overview of the main texts studied within this module
Key teaching strategies to ensure student achievement in this module

Session 4 - Module C: The Craft of Writing

1 hour and 30 minutes

A detailed unpacking of the syllabus rubric which will create a detailed understanding of the module requirements
A study of a selection of texts that deal with the craft and discipline of writing
A focus on how to encourage, develop and nurture student’s writing abilities

Although the presenter provides heaps of resources, generating some conversations around the texts would have been beneficial. There was too much “teacher-talk”! It would have been better to have schools share what they are doing so we could check where everyone is at.

Creator

An experienced HSC teacher for over 15 years, Garry’s expertise in English has come from a foundational love of literature and learning. He currently lectures HSC students, provides inservice training for teachers and spends large amounts of time attempting to inspire teenagers to engage with literature through teaching English at the Illawarra Christian School on the picturesque South Coast. He also enjoys tripping to the city on occasion and most weekends will find him performing rock and blues music in venues up and down the coast.
