General Description

This Creative Writing workshop focuses on the ways ‘Flash Fiction’ narrative style, methods and resources can help students maximise Section II results.
Varied resources and teaching strategies linked to narrative style, structure, characterisation and language use will be examined. Discussion will also focus on how to increase student confidence in expressing ‘discovery’ moments and experiences in their writing.

Sessions

Session 1 - Conceptualising 'Discovery' for Section II

1 hour and 30 minutes

The focus of the opening session will be to clarify and stress the common Area of Study rubric requirements. This will be linked throughout to how conceptual ideas need to considered in each section of Paper One.
The Section II Creative Writing exam response must be conceptually rich and reflect awareness of feedback from the Marking Centre and past exam questions.

Session 2 - Creative Writing and 'Flash Fiction' techniques

2 hours

Booklet and media presentation will be used to evaluate varied creative writing techniques suitable for Section II.
Group work relating to Past questions, Marking Centre feedback and sample scripts will clarify main the components for an exemplary Section II response.
Discussion of varied Teaching and Learning strategies for building student writing skills.

Session 3 - Developing Writing Skills through drafts and exemplar scripts

1 hour and 30 minutes

Strategies for improving the quality of student draft scenarios as part of skill building process will be discussed, using past HSC Section II question type triggers.
Developing Time management skills by examining ‘Flash Fiction’ structure and exemplar scripts.
Peer marking guidelines examined to build student confidence and and awareness of the importance of drafting and editing prior to the exam.
