Unit 1. Understanding Learning Difficulties (LD)

35 minutes

Have you ever wondered why we call them learning difficulties in Australia, where in other countries these difficulties are labelled disabilities? During this unit you will learn about the history of learning difficulties in Australia. You will develop an understanding of the common types of learning difficulties and the broad approaches to supporting students with LD’s.
Unit 2. Strategies that work for students with LD

35 minutes

Drawing on Hatties' (2012) “Visible Learning” research and a meta analysis of “what really works in special and inclusive education” by David Mitchell (2008) this unit will walk you through the evidence for strategies that have an evidence base for working on students with learning difficulties.

Unit 3. How to make adjustments for students with Learning Difficulties

40 minutes

During this unit we explore just exactly what adjustments are. We also examine some simple adjustments all effective teachers make to include all learners.

Unit 4. Supporting students with literacy difficulties

30 minutes

Literacy difficulties are defined as difficulty learning to read and write despite effective instruction. During this unit you will develop an understanding of the range of literacy difficulties present. You will also learn about the developmental disorder dyslexia. This unit will enable you to carry out simple screening assessments for dyslexia. You will also learn some strategies to support students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia.

Unit 5. Supporting students with numeracy difficulties

40 minutes

This unit will provide you with strategies to support students with numeracy difficulties and dyscalculia. Students who present with numeracy difficulties are often misunderstood or teachers in large classes ‘give up’ on them.

This course was an excellent resource to either refresh or clarify understanding of students with learning difficulties and comparison/contrast between these students and students with disabilities.
It also provided some tips on how to improve outcome for those students.
I would recommend this course to all teachers, as we do teach students with such a wide range of learning needs

During this course I was able to reflect on the different strategies that I use in my classroom. It provided me with some new strategies but also reminded me of others that I was currently not utilizing. The dyslexia information was invaluable and I look forward to doing some more independent reading/research on this subject.

Supporting Students with Learning Difficulties

The course was well structured & covered the subject in general. It may have been more useful for teachers who are relatively new to teaching- I felt I needed more specific strategies to help develop literacy skills as I was already aware of most of the strategies suggested. The text of the course also needs to be proofread carefully as there are a number of mistakes, especially spelling. Some of the quizzes seemed rather superficial, just for the sake of interaction.

This course was very informative and allowed me to understand the underlying issues with these students. The teaching strategies taught are a great insight to ensure that we as teachers are modifying/differentiating the curriculum for these students. I quite enjoyed this short course!

Great course looking at the different learning difficulties that students experience. Also great tips on recognising and dealing with these in the classroom.

I am currently a Learning Support Coordinator. I manage a dynamic department of learning support teachers and assistants. The role of the Learning Support Coordinator has changed significantly with the development of inclusive educational practices. Gone are the days of being based in a resource room and having students come out of class to receive remedial instruction. These days I find myself as a leader of interventions and programs and a consultant to teachers and the wider community. This has enabled me to keep abreast of state and national directions and issues related to special education.
