General Description

Exploring Module C ‘Representation and Text’ using ‘The Crucible’ as a prescribed text. Focus will be on examining ‘People and Politics’ in the play and how meaning has been shaped about political perspectives, events and ideas.

Current Stage 6 English teachers studying this Module C text. Advanced or those considering doing so. Prior familiarity with the play advantageous.

Sessions

Session 1 - Conceptualisation of ‘Representing People and Politics in ‘The Crucible’

1 hour and 15 minutes

This will be delivered a via multi-media presentation and associated sections of the accompanying booklet. The focus of the opening session will be to clarify the Module elective requirements in terms of representation, textual form and media of production. Discussion about how ‘People and Politics’ could be explored within the text will also be a focus.

Session 2-Critical Analysis of 'The Crucible'

2 hours

The play’s historical context and style will be evaluated in depth via the course workbook and associated resources.Group work will be involved to for analysis and for the development of suitable classroom resources. T&L strategies and approaches for developing student writing skills for this module will also be examined.

Session 3- Developing Writing Skills and use of appropriate Related Texts

1 hour and 40 minutes

Methods for developing student writing skills for Module C and ‘The Crucible’ will be discussed.. Group work will clarify the core knowledge that is required as well as ways to help students write a personal response within a strong thesis framework. Sample related texts will be examined and how students could effectively use them.

I’ve been to Barbara’s presentation twice. Her wonderful engagement with modules and area of studies are incredible. Her resources are spectacular. Our school use all of her textbooks and really, when you think of it, she’s a teacher’s bestfriend. I always leave feeling better.

Barbara has been English KLA co-ordinator at Richmond H.S. and Bede Polding College, Windsor South. She has extensive teaching and training experience with Junior and Senior Secondary English courses as well as Certificates in Mentoring and Professional Leadership. Over thirty Teacher Resource Textbooks have been published over the past fifteen years.
Developing resources for all Stage 6 English courses, remains a particular area of interest and expertise.
