This course will provide participants with pedadogical theories linked to the use of ipad apps for the promotion of engagement of students with different maths topics. Week by week participants will receive complete lesson plans that can be implemented straight away. The course will build ICT knowledge and awareness of apps, which can be utilised to create their own engaging lesson plans.

Sessions

Intro to Lesson Planner

1 hour

This session introduces you to the lesson planner used throughout this course. Links to Blooms', Multiple Intelligences and Differentiation are also covered.

Inverse Operations

1 hour

This session will cover the teaching of Inverse operations to students and the apps to engage students with the topic. A range of differentiation techniques will be included as well as activities that reinforce the mathematical concepts both on the ipad and by hand.

Ratio & Scale

1 hour

This session will cover the teaching of ratios and scale to students and the apps to engage students with the topic. A range of differentiation techniques will be included as well as activities that reinforce the mathematical concepts both on the ipad and by hand. This lesson in particular relates to real life concepts and lends itself to a cross-curricular projects.

Probability

1 hour

This session will cover the teaching of probability to students and the apps to engage students with the topic. You will be given the chance to create your own lesson with apps provided.

Distance between two point

1 hour

This session will cover the concept of finding the distance between two points. You will be given the opportunity to create a resource to use in your classroom with the apps to engage students with these skills.

Equations

1 hour

This session will cover the revision of concepts related to equations. The apps used will engage students in the skills of revising for a complex topic and preparation for tests. A range of differentiation techniques will be included as well as activities that reinforce the mathematical concepts both on the ipad and by hand. This lesson in particular involves group work and has a link for students to qr codes and being the “teacher” themselves.

Assessment

1 hour

This session involves you choosing your own concept or topic and finding apps relevant to this area and creating another lesson plan which you will submit. You will gain the feedback of other participants in order further refine your lesson plan for immediate use in your classroom.

The course was great for beginner teachers to help guide them through lesson plans and integrating technology in their plans. However, the way the advert read for this course I though it was more about discussing and discovering ipad apps and other features of ipads to use in the class room that i could integrate into my lesson already.

The delivery of the course has been reasonable. Unfortunately the parts where comment was required about other participants lesson plans was impossible as I was unable to see these. After several comments requesting how to do this without response I gave up on that. It has been very frustrating to ask for assistance and get absolutely no response. This is certainly an area that needs improvement.

I was looking forward to this course and feel disappointed by the lack of support supplied during the course. I discovered a file missing in one activity and
queried this. This was never answered.

There was numerous times myself and other participate asked questions in the comment sections. We never received a reply.

The course itself I felt had a lot of emphasis on us doing all the work. Which is fine if the support had been there. I thought it would have a larger number of apps referenced in the course.

In summary more course content is required and more support.

The course gave lots of opportunities for participants to experiment with using different IPad apps in the classroom. There was a lot more work involved than I thought there would be and it was really difficult to find other participants when you have to give feedback on their lesson. It was lucky that another participant worked in the same school as me so we could share the work that we were doing.

Kirsty is one of the owners and consultants for Ubitec Educational Consultants who specialise in ICT Professional Development for schools. Kirsty is also the Academic Dean of Technology & eLearning at Kilvington Grammar School and is focused on integrating technology into all levels of education. She is a Mathematics and IT teacher and has been integral in the implementation of the 1:1 iPad program at Kilvington.

Kirsty has a Bachelors degree in both Science, with a Major in Mathematical Modelling and Secondary Teaching. She also has a Masters of Information and Communication Technology in Education.
