Session 1 ~ Developing Contextual and Rhetorical Understanding:
This session would focus on clarifying the module focus and establishing the key Rhetorical elements required for speech evaluation. This would involve contextual understanding for each text and developing the appropriate meta-language for referencing the various rhetorical and other persuasive techniques used by the different speakers.
The various teaching and learning strategies that could be used for personalising student response in ways that demonstrate deep understanding and knowledge would also be discussed and evaluated.
Session 2 ~ Textual Deconstruction of THREE of the prescribed speeches:
Course notes include summation tables for the speeches being evaluated that help define key features of textual integrity as well as elements of cross evaluation of core themes, purpose, construction and language features and techniques as well as contextual significance.
Session 3 ~ Developing student interpretive and response skills:
Interpretive and response stills would be developed via examination of past HSC questions and how they could have been approached, using the representative speeches closely studied in Session 2.
Exemplar student responses that include annotated speeches, tables, mind-maps, polished paragraphs and essays would be examined to determine strengths and weaknesses.
T & L approaches for refining student responses for an exam context would be discussed as well as the use of ICT materials. Resource sharing would be encouraged amongst participants.
