Training in new technologies

Founded by Ben Roberts, an Electronics Engineer, Electronics Trade Certificate, Associate Diploma in Electronics Engineering, Cert IV: Computer Graphics and Animation, Cert IV: Training and Assessment (TAE40110 incl. TAELLN411), and Heike Roberts, a professional teacher, Bachelor of Education, Cert IV: Training and Assessment (TAE40110 incl. TAELLN411), BA (Interpreting & Translation). Modfab self-funded two pilot programs in Illawarra schools. The first was at Figtree High School where three 3D printers, consumables and training were supplied. Perceiving the needs of teachers when dealing with new technology, Modfab also generated a suite of training materials and ready to go lessons, so that the teachers could incorporate the 3D printers into their curriculum planning more easily.
The second Pilot program was run at Figtree Heights Public School to gain some insight on how 3D printing could be utilised in the K-6 years NSW Syllabus. Both of these pilot programs were a great success, and allowed Modfab to further tailor its training and lesson content to suit primary and secondary schools. Modfab’s activities gained the attention of NSW State Training who agreed to assist in running a pilot program to train teachers in 3D printing. This resulted in fourteen candidates from primary school, secondary school and TAFE, gaining nationally recognised training in 3D printing. From then Modfab has trained over 45 teachers from TAFE, high School and primary school, and provided training support and after sales support to over 23 schools.
Modfab also runs holiday workshops at the Wollongong Science Centre, and a 3D Printing and CAD Modelling Course: Become a Maker – Early Learning Labs (a holiday program for gifted and talented students), (Years 5 – 6 Only) and Learning Labs (Years 7- 10 only) at the University of Wollongong.
Modfab has been endorsed as a training provider by BOSTES and completing the “Comprehensive 3D Printing and 3D CAD Modelling: From STEM to STREAHMD course will contribute 10 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing 3.1.2, 3.3.2, 3.4.2, 4.4.2, 4.5.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation.

Very thorough. The examples used were very good. The written resources need modifying. It is difficult when we are at different levels, but it would be good to have demonstration steps in smaller chunks before moving onto next steps.
