Helen Mills

Helen initially worked as a LOTE teacher in primary schools in WA. Her interest in gifted education led to a position with the Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) program in 2000. This became permanent in 2004. In 2010, Helen completed her Master’s degree in Education with Monash University, specializing in gifted education. Helen’s philosophy is that, as teachers, we have a responsibility to give students the skills and knowledge to become autonomous and adventurous learners with an understanding of their world and how they can contribute to its improvement.

Course was good, the only thing missing was that I found it lacking in feedback between participants, possibly because there were not many of us.

I found the course fairly interesting, a little demanding and challenging, but generally rewarding. Thinking tasks were worthwhile but often the tasks were unclear regarding what we had to do. I felt that they also applied mostly to the primary school context, rather than high school. Instructions were sometimes unclear for some modules.

This course provide a lot of variety. I as provided with many resources I could use to engage students in creative thinking in my classroom. I also liked the fact that the resources could be easily adapted to suit variety of subject areas. The course coordinator gave me timely feedback and encouraged me to engage in thought provoking discussions with herself and my fellow students.

The presenter/host online commented regularly which was good but would have liked some more direction and suggestions for my subject area on how to adapt learning activities.

It really opened my eyes to the identification and understanding of Gifted and Talented students, as well as ways in which modifications can be made in my classroom.
