Source Analysis and Writing Skills for History - Online

The course should be retitled Source Analysis 101. I cam to it hoping to deepen my knowledge and skills and enhance the teaching of source analysis in the classroom. What I found was a comprehensive but foundational outline which, although I have been able to create some material which would be beneficial to my peers who are new to teaching history, didn’t develop my knowledge or enhance my skills to any great extent.

The Markers analysis and responses will be valuable for a particular task I have in mind which will be of benefit to students – so there have been some resources I could use.

Great online delivery.
Lots of readings. Not easily read on tablet. Scans are not so clear. Overall lots to read on. Great course.

The samples of student work and marker’s comments were by far the most beneficial aspect of this course – invaluable for student improvement and formative feedback.

Very helpful for breaking the subject down into key concepts and the associated skills, with ways to teach and assess these clearly. Good range of activities, including sample marking of longer responses.

Despite having taught History for some time I found the content refreshing and easily transferable to the classroom.
It was the first online course I have done and so I left it to the last minute to squeeze in – working through the exercises made me reflect upon the processes we demand of our own students and the importance to have clear instructions/aims. Enjoyed the course thoroughly and took away several elements to use in my classes.

I have found the Head of Department course to be very informative and an excellent opportunity to assist me in the reflection upon my leadership style. The readings and resources supplied were up to date and stimulated much thought on my behalf and much discussion within my team. I would recommend this course to anyone wishing to take on the role of Head of Department or to reflect on their current position.

The course was very interesting and thought provoking. The articles and material we read as part of the course were insightful, relevant and provided in-depth exploration into a range of topics. I learnt a lot from not only reading the material but also reflecting on the opinions of others.

I found the course topics and readings very interesting. They provided me with valuable insights into theories and models of leadership. Many of the tasks allowed me to put the theory into a practical context by reflecting upon the situations that I face everyday in my role as a leader.I feel that I have a clearer picture of my role and the type of leader that I would like to be.
